The construction of the remediation installation is underway

On January 19, 2021, the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection in Bydgoszcz signed a contract for the construction of an installation for the remediation of polluted areas in the area of the former ZACHEM Chemical Plant.

The task was entrusted to the Polish-French consortium of Remea Societe par actions simplified a associe unique, Remea Sp. z o. o. and Menard Sp. z o. o. The installation will be built within 6 months and will constitute a barrier protecting the Łęgnowo-Wieś and Łęgnowo housing estates in Bydgoszcz against pollution migrating from the "Zielona" landfill complex.

The remediation system will operate at least until 2023. It will prevent the spread of pollutants and clean the soil and groundwater over an area of over 26 ha from harmful substances typical of the industrial production of the former ZACHEM - says Szymon Kosmalski, Regional Director of Environmental Protection in Bydgoszcz.

The signing of the contract for the installation was preceded by a nearly 2-month pilot phase, during which an experimental stand was designed and built. This stage made it possible to test an innovative method of cleaning soil and groundwater, and to implement appropriate modifications to meet the needs of the target installation's efficiency. In order to monitor the progress of remediation activities on an ongoing basis, a monitoring network consisting of a dozen or so piezometers equipped with a set of automatic sensors for measuring selected parameters was also built earlier in the area of the former ZACHEM. The value of the remediation project is over PLN 90 million. The project "Remediation of polluted areas in the area of the former ZChEM "ZACHEM" in Bydgoszcz in order to eliminate health and environmental hazards, including the Natura 2000 area of the Lower Vistula Valley and the Baltic Sea" is co-financed by the European Union from the European Cohesion Fund under the Infrastructure and Environment.
