About project

Basic information about the project

The project "Remediation of polluted areas in the area of the former ZCH "Zachem" in Bydgoszcz in order to eliminate health and environmental hazards, including the Natura 2000 area of the Lower Vistula Valley and the Baltic Sea" is co-financed by the European Union from the European Cohesion Fund under the Infrastructure and Environment

On June 22, 2018, the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management and the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection in Bydgoszcz concluded an agreement for co-financing the project "Remediation of polluted areas in the area of the former ZCH "Zachem" in Bydgoszcz in order to eliminate health and environmental hazards, including for of the Natura 2000 area of the Lower Vistula Valley and the Baltic Sea” No. POIS.02.05.00-00-0003/17 under Measure 2.5 Improving the quality of the urban environment, priority axis II of the Operational Program Infrastructure and Environment 2014-2020.

Project goals

The project primarily serves the public interest and contributes to the effective implementation of the objectives of the Operational Program Infrastructure and Environment by eliminating direct environmental threats in the area of influence of the former Zakłady Chemiczne "ZACHEM" S.A. in Bydgoszcz, with particular emphasis on the protection of the priceless Natura 2000 area of the Lower Vistula Valley and the elimination of a direct health threat to the inhabitants of the Łęgnowo and Łęgnowo-Wieś housing estates located in the area of migration of pollutants from the area of the landfill complex at ul. green.

Planned effects

The result of the project will be the cleaning of the contaminated soil and water environment from organic and inorganic pollutants emitted from the complex of landfills at ul. Zielona, located within the boundaries of the former Zakłady Chemiczne "ZACHEM" S.A. The implemented actions will make it possible to stop the migration of pollutants from contaminated areas to residential areas and the Natura 2000 area of the Lower Vistula Valley, which will eliminate health and environmental risks in the area of impact of Zakłady Chemiczne "ZACHEM" S.A.

Project location

The area subject to remediation, i.e. pre-cleaning and/or cleaning of the soil and water environment, covers an area of 26.90 ha. It is located in the eastern part of Bydgoszcz and on the eastern edge of the border of the former Zakłady Chemiczne "ZACHEM" S.A. It is a zone of direct contact of local residents with contaminated ground and underground water, and is also a front zone of pollution, which is the greatest environmental threat to the Natura 2000 area of the Lower Vistula Valley.

Technology description

As part of the project, it is planned to drill 7 deep wells and subject the soil and water environment to pump-and-treat (P&T) treatment. This technique consists in pumping out polluted groundwater, subjecting it to partial treatment in a special pre-treatment unit, and then injecting it back into the rock mass using injection wells, thanks to which the water conditions in the remediation area are not disturbed. For ongoing control of the progress of remediation activities, it is planned to build a monitoring network consisting of a dozen or so piezometers equipped with a set of automatic sensors for measuring selected physicochemical parameters. The planned remediation measures will ensure effective cleaning of the soil and water environment, along with the washing away of pollutants absorbed on the ground, and the constructed wells will constitute a hydrodynamic barrier that will effectively stop or at least significantly reduce further propagation of pollutants, thus protecting housing estates against their further inflow.
