RDOŚ has completed preliminary studies of the soil and water environment on the site of the former "ZACHEM" plant

The Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection in Bydgoszcz has completed preliminary studies of the soil and water environment in an area of approximately 1.5 ha, where until 2013 the installation for the production and storage of dinitrotoluene (DNT) of the former Zakłady Chemiczne "ZACHEM" operated. The study area is located approx. 1.3 km to the south-west of the area covered by the Project entitled: "Remediation of polluted areas in the area of the former ZCH "Zachem" Chemical Plant in Bydgoszcz in order to eliminate health and environmental hazards, including for the Natura 2000 area Lower Vistula Valley and the Baltic Sea”, co-financed from OPI&E funds for 2014-2020, priority axis II – Environmental protection, including adaptation to climate change, measure 2.5 Improving the quality of the urban environment.

Tests in the subsurface layer of the soil (i.e. 0-0.25 m below ground level) showed exceeding the quality standards for soils of group IV, in terms of dinitrotoluene isomers (2,4-DNT and 2,6-DNT). In the deeper layer (3-6 m below ground level), the presence of nitrotoluene and dinitrotoluene contamination was found. Groundwater flowing through the study area showed a poor chemical status due to the high content of organic substances, characteristic for the production of ZCh. "Zachem" such as nitro compounds, PAHs, metals and semi-metals and other inorganic substances. The task was carried out with the funds of the Provincial Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management in Toruń.

The preliminary studies carried out require further verification by performing detailed studies that will allow to determine both the exact direction of flow and the extent of occurrence of pollutants carried by groundwater towards the Łęgnowo, Łęgnowo-Wieś and Plątnowo housing estates. A tender for detailed studies will be announced by the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection in Bydgoszcz in 2020.
