More than one million cubic meters of underground water have already been purified

More than one million cubic meters of underground water have already been purified as part of the project implemented by the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection in Bydgoszcz, entitled "Remediation of polluted areas in the area of the former ZCH "Zachem" in Bydgoszcz in order to eliminate health and environmental hazards, including for the Natura 2000 area of the Lower Vistula Valley and the Baltic Sea" co-financed by the Operational Program Infrastructure and Environment 2014-2020.

The innovative remediation installation launched in September 2021 pumps out contaminated groundwater with a capacity of not less than 100 m3/h, purifies it, and then injects water back into the aquifer. Over the last 15 months of operation of the remediation system, over 21.28 Mg of organic substances characterized by the TOC parameter and over 3.7 Mg of harmful phenolic substances were removed from the soil and water environment.

The improvement in the quality of the environment is confirmed by environmental tests performed under the conditions of remediation. The analysis of soil pollution in the period from July 2019 to March/April 2022 showed a reduction in the load of pollutants in the soil by about 50%, while in the case of the aeration zone, an ecological effect was achieved in the form of limiting pollution to acceptable levels in accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of the Environment of of September 1, 2016 on the method of assessing contamination of the earth's surface in the entire area of 26.9 ha of remediation works. Control studies also show a significant decrease in the load of pollutants of substances that may have a negative impact on the condition of groundwater, which means that remediation has a positive impact on the water environment of the area. Independent research conducted at the request of the City of Bydgoszcz in November 2021 also indicates a general improvement in the quality of groundwater in the area of the Łęgnowo-Wieś housing estate compared to the results of the research obtained in 2018.
