Ecosystem

The project delivery area spans the surface of forest concentration divisions No. 85 and 86 owned by State Forest District Bydgoszcz, located between Nowotoruńska street and the Bydgoszcz-Toruń railway line. Ornithological studies have shown the area to be inhabited by 28 bird species. Six species have been confirmed as singing in the area, nests and traces of foraging and residence observed as well. These species are unthreatened, their populations high and largely present throughout Poland, the birds using a broad spectrum of habitat types.

Studies of the remediation activity zone ecosystem allowed a conclusion that the area is inhabited by 9 mammal species, wild boar and red squirrel direct sightings confirmed.

Of all the amphibians and reptiles present in the ecosystem, studies have proven the occurrence of common lowland species associated with forest habitats. These include, but are not limited to: the common frog (Rana temporaria), common toad (Bufo bufo), sand lizard (Lacerta agilis) and slow worm (Anguis fragilis). A broad array of invertebrates (chiefly insects) has been inventoried as well, common, invasive or product pine forest pest species prevailing. Neither the presence of protected invertebrates nor habitats particularly favourable to their residence have been confirmed.

The research zone comprises identified and confirmed forest concentrations of dominant pine monocultures varying in age: stands over 160 years old to young pine concentrations aged ten and above. Over 160 years old, the oldest pine stand stretches out in a band approximately 90-120 metres wide along the north side of Plątnowska street; local pine stands have also been identified on the south side.

The current stand comprises a non-complex species structure, the dominant Scottish pine accompanied by red oak, sessile oak (local stands), birch, black locust, maple, rowan, hornbeam, linden and larch. The spatial structure is homogenous, with a well-developed canopy layer and poorly developed understory, the species mix including wildly growing trees and shrubs: pine, oak, birch, black cherry, black locust, maple and juniper.

The forest floor features varied concentrations, the dominant moss accompanied by local or extended patches of grasses, lichens, European blueberry and herbaceous plants. Forest floor concentrations are typical for production pine forests, identified species including moss (red-stemmed feathermoss Pleurozium schreberi) and lichens (many-forked cup lichen Cladonia furcata).

The occurrence of partially-protected plant species has been confirmed in local vegetation: dark-red helleborine and dwarf everlast, the presence of both isolated and scarce in the area.
